The North Quabbin Garden Club exists to encourage interest in all phases of home gardening, to promote better horticultural practices, and to foster civic beauty, all with an emphasis on native plants, organic gardening, and the conservation of natural resources.

We offer programs, field trips, workshops, and reading groups on a variety of gardening topics and plan to engage in civic beautification projects. Our initial project is to create a backyard habitat garden at the Millers River Environmental Center in Athol, but we also hope to develop or support projects in all our member towns.

Meetings are held the third Thursday of most months at 7 p.m. at the Millers River Environmental Center, 100 Main St., Athol. Take a look at our upcoming programs, which are free to members, $5 for nonmembers:

  • Saturday, July 19, 1:30 p.m.: Members’ Gardens & Potluck (members only)
    First visit the fairyland garden of member Carole Moisan and then go with your potluck item to the garden of member Warren Pratt. Bring a spouse or guest if you like.
     
  • Sunday, July 20, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.: North Quabbin Garden Tour
    The ninth annual North Quabbin Garden Tour will feature 13 PLUS gardens in the Tully, West Royalston and Warwick area on Sunday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Three of the gardens are certified by the National Wildlife Federation as wildlife habitat gardens. Sponsored by the Athol Bird & Nature Club with assistance from the North Quabbin Garden Club, the event benefits the Millers River Environmental Center. Tickets ($5 per person or $15 per carload) are available at Lu’s Florist and Noel’s Nursery in Orange and at Agway, Bruce’s Browser and the Center in Athol. Day-of tickets are also available in Warwick Center, which will host a lunch ($6) and Farmers’ Market from 12-2 p.m.
     
  • Thursday, September 18, 7 p.m.: Edible Wild Plants of the Northeast Naturalist John Root will show us how to identify and use native plants for food and beverage and distribute an illustrated pamphlet. This is a joint meeting with the Athol Bird & Nature Club.
     
  • Thursday, October 16, 7 p.m.: Give ‘n’ Take with Members
    Questions about herbs, perennials, lawns, native plants? Great garden tips to share? Bring them to the forum, along with pictures of your garden successes and garden failures.
     
  • Tuesday, October 28, 7 p.m.: Book Group on Brother Cadfel
    Buy or borrow a copy of any of the Brother Cadfel “medieval herbal mysteries” by Ellis Peters and join the discussion.
     
  • Thursday, November 20, 7 p.m.: Obligations on the Edge
    Landscape consultant Frances Clark will discuss how we can quilt together suburban plantings in ways to enhance habitats for wildlife and native plants.
     
  • Thursday, December 18, 7 p.m.: NQGC Annual Meeting (members only)
    We’ll conduct our annual business and share a potluck dinner and Yankee swap.

Membership in the North Quabbin Garden Club is open to anyone with an interest in any form of gardening. You can print out a copy of the registration form and mail it to us.
